How to create the right work/life balance mindset for 2023

If 2022 was a tough year within your organisation, the new year offers the ideal opportunity for a fresh start.

Kick off the year in the right way, and you can help to boost morale and productivity within your team. And crucially, you can help your staff to improve their mental health and avoid burnout.

It’s all about getting the right work/life balance. But this isn’t just down to your employees to figure out, as the company culture also plays a major part. As a leader, you can set the example. You can also work alongside your team to establish healthier new work patterns and behaviours.

Here are just a few practical steps you can start taking right away, to help you start 2023 as you mean to go on:

Offer flexible work options

If you can get the right fit, flexible working can help your employees achieve a better work/life balance. It offers all kinds of benefits, from boosting morale to reducing lateness and absenteeism. It can reduce stress, increase productivity and even affect staff turnover.

In fact, according to a recent study from Employment Hero, over 40% of employees between the ages of 18 and 35 said they’d consider leaving their role if there was no option to work remotely.

But it’s important to develop a model that works for the business, and your team. Not everyone wants the same thing, nor do they work in the same way. However, in the same Employment Hero survey, it was revealed that most UK workers would prefer the hybrid model, as they missed being in the same space as their colleagues.

Reevaluate goals, priorities and working styles

Before you get fully into the new year, there’s an opportunity to pause and reassess. Take the time to look at old working styles and routines, along with targets and priorities.

This is the ideal time to throw out things that don’t work, and which slow your team down. Make changes as a team, so that together you can learn healthier, more productive new habits.

Build wellness into the working week

If you want your team to embrace a more positive mindset during 2023, you need to make wellness a priority. Wellness isn’t something you only touch upon for a one-off special event. Instead, you should aim to build regular, informal check-ins into the working week.

This can help to foster a more open and transparent culture, where employees feel comfortable talking about issues that are bothering them.

You can also create a safe space for talking about workplace wellbeing. This should be where your employees can meet you one on one, to develop personalised solutions to their challenges. This could be access to tools, resources or training, or a switch to working flexibly.
